Due to the kindness of my computer-savvy nephew, Todd, there’s a fresh, new look to my blog. For those of you following my posts, the improvements should have transitioned smoothly–all because of Todd’s awesome technological skills. If I had been in charge of this move—there’s no telling what might have happened. A huge thanks to Todd for making this happen. And a huge thanks to all of you for staying tuned.
A reader of the Yikes! My Special Needs Daughter Had Sex! post was concerned about the sharing of Lindsey’s personal experiences. And rightfully so. Roxanne C. wrote:
I read the article and understand how parents and their child lack support for the tough questions. However, I wonder about the lack of privacy for the young adult involved since her experience is now on the web? Not that kids don’t publish their own experiences but I think privacy for those in our care is a fine line and a hard question.
I wondered when that question/concern would arise and was glad someone addressed it this soon. My response:
It has weighed heavy on my heart on whether to share the details of my daughter’s life. Lindsey is now 32 years old and getting married to her longtime boyfriend. I wouldn’t have been comfortable sharing this at the time it happened, but feel that enough years have passed that I can do so now. There are many things I won’t share–things that I don’t have firsthand knowledge of–but I am sharing what was told to me (by Lindsey) /and my (personal) experiences of raising a special needs daughter. Also, Lindsey knows I’m writing a book about how she changed my life. She tells people that the book is about “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” I hope you will follow along and see how the story comes out. And I do appreciate your concerns. I had them myself, but felt I could help other parents who may have to deal with the same issues we did.
Below is a little interview I did with Lindsey, (Yes, I did know the answers but it was the only way I could make her to feel comfortable enough to open up and share). I asked her questions about her age, her wedding, and how she feels about the book. I wanted her personality to shine. She was a bit camera shy in the beginning, but she did real good. ♥
This is my first attempt at taping her. Let’s hope I improve over time.
My first book, Loving Lindsey: Raising a Daughter with Special Needs will be out September 26, 2017. If you would like to learn more, click here.
