Ten Things of Thankful – January 26, 2014

This last week has been interesting to say the least. Some of the simplest things can make me smile. This week I’m thankful:

1)   John is over the stomach flu. This shouldn’t need further explanation. If any reader has had someone with the stomach flu in his/her home recently, you will fully understand the amount of gratitude in that one statement.

2)   that, so far, John hasn’t passed his flu symptoms on to me. (See #1 above.)

3)   for long, slow walks with my husband. Today we put on winter coats, gloves, and ear muffs so we could brave the chill and walk around our neighborhood. It was awesome to have him up and about. And he looks so much better now that his natural color has returned.

4)   that somehow the sun forced through the thick, gloomy fog that had descended on our town for several days and we’re enjoying clear blue skies. I know the rain is coming, so I’m thankful for every minute of sunshine.

5) for the clear blue skies because I can see Mount Hood and Mount Saint Helens and even Mount Rainier from my upstairs writing room. Even though they are below their normal snow pack for this time of year, the mountains still look majestic. (Don’t let the clear blue skies fool you. It is freezing cold outside!)

6)   that Lindsey and Nick’s first week of marriage counseling went well and they are excited and willing to try the ideas suggested.

7)   for the gas furnace in the garage and the gas fireplace in our family room. I wrapped myself in a blanket and turned both of them on/up to take the chill off. I’ll likely regret this decision once the bill comes, but for today, I’m thankful we have access to heat and flame.

8)   that I’m working on my Out One Ear manuscript again after receiving edits from a small Oregon press. I was worried it would be difficult to make the recommended changes, but the process is going smoother than anticipated. Maybe 2014 will be the year I finish this book!

9)   Diet Pepsi was on sale this week. I’d secretly vowed if I couldn’t find a half case for $3, I’d quit drinking it. Since Safeway came through, I have a fresh stash in my garage. (I know people say diet cola is bad for you, but it is my only vice, and this drink has become my best friend.) But I’m especially thankful I didn’t have to quit.

10)   for Lindsey’s hugs. That girl likes to hug and I love being the recipient. She’s a darn good hugger.

I share many passions in this world: antiquing, gardening, hiking, traveling, taking amateur photographs, writing, sitting on a white, sandy beach with my husband and sipping a frozen margarita—just to name a few. If you enjoy any of these things too, let's connect! The world is better with friends.
